Let’s Make Hand Washing Contagious!

Let’s get real for a moment. When was the last time you washed your hands?

Many hands in the workplace touch the same items and it’s easy to become a victim of the nasty bug that often contaminates the office like wildfire.

Germs don't just lurk on surfaces, they also hover in the air and could be breathed in. The best way to prevent such an epidemic from spreading in the workplace might require one to live in a germ-free bubble but there are better ways.

Cleaning frequently is one way to cut down on the number of cold and flu germs that are passed from one co-worker to another.

Put on your armor and hold up your shield. Let’s make hand washing contagious now!

1) Clean, daily

Make cleaning a priority in the workplace. Most employees spend more productive hours at work than they do at home during any given weekday. Ensure your workplace is frequently cleaned – especially common surfaces, like the time clock, door knobs, microwave, coffee marker – to name a few. Kill germs and bacteria that grow on surfaces with hospital-grade disinfectants, and create a safer, healthier workplace.

2) Stock up on bottles of hand wash and hand sanitizer

Ok, this is probably the most obvious step, right? Many say that hand washing is the single-best thing a person can do to keep themselves safe during the cold/flu season. Wash your hands continuously throughout the day. But don’t start a race with your coworker to see how quickly you can wash your hands. The CDC recommends creating a nice lather and then scrubbing your hands for at least 20 seconds.

3) Show them don’t just tell them!

Motivate your employees with attention grabbing posters mounted around your business. And ensure your message doesn’t blend in – make it stand out. Rotate your posters and replace old ones so message don’t start to blend in with the wall space. With extra bottles of hand sanitizer readily available for all workers and eye-catching graphics, employees will quickly get in the habit of continuously washing their hands.

4) Take care of YOU

Sleep helps the body repair blood vessels and without quality sleep, your body is subject stressors that can make you sick. When you get plenty of rest, eat a balanced meal, and exercise, you’re fueling your body with what it needs to fight off infection and stay healthy.

Motivate your workers to eat right and exercise with programs like the Biggest Loser Challenge or by providing healthy snacks.

5) Stay away from your contagious workers

When you hear someone achoo, say God bless you and walk away. The purpose of a sneeze is to expel mucus containing foreign particles, which means a sneeze can be triggered by the common cold or flu. Avoid close contact and shaking hands with others that are ill with a cold or flu.
